What began as a joyful New Year’s celebration in the Swiss ski town of Crans-Montana quickly turned into a heartbreaking disaster. In the early hours of Thursday morning, a fire broke out inside a crowded bar, killing at least 40 people and leaving nearly 115 others injured.
The blaze started around 1:30 a.m. at a popular bar called Le Constellation, a venue that can hold more than 300 people. Many guests were inside celebrating when the fire spread. Police said a large number of the injured are in critical condition and are fighting for their lives.
At first, there were reports of an explosion causing the fire. Later, authorities clarified that it was actually the fire that led to an explosion inside the building. Investigators are still working to find out exactly how the fire began, but officials stressed that there is no indication it was an attack.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin called the incident one of the worst tragedies the country has ever experienced. The full death toll may take time to confirm, as many victims were badly burned. Specialists are using DNA and dental records to identify those who lost their lives.
Because Crans-Montana is an international ski destination, officials believe that people from several countries are among the victims. Hospitals across Switzerland, as well as in nearby countries, are treating the injured.
France has already taken in three injured victims, and President Emmanuel Macron said he personally spoke with Swiss leaders to offer help. French authorities confirmed that nine French citizens were injured, while eight others are still unaccounted for. Italy also reported that at least 15 of its citizens were hurt, with a similar number missing.
As families wait anxiously for news, the tragedy has cast a dark shadow over what was meant to be a night of celebration, leaving Switzerland and several other countries mourning together.
