George Clooney and Family Become French Citizens, Embracing a Quieter Life in France

George Clooney and his family have quietly taken a big step in their life in Europe they are now officially French citizens.

France’s government confirmed that the Hollywood actor, his wife Amal, and their twin children, Ella and Alexander, were granted French citizenship. The decision was published last weekend in France’s official government records, where citizenship approvals are announced.

Amal Clooney, the well-known human rights lawyer, was listed under her maiden name, Amal Alamuddin. The notice also revealed a small fun fact many fans may not know George Clooney middle name is Timothy.

The move makes sense given how much time the family now spends in France. In 2021, the Clooneys bought a large country estate there, and George has openly shared that France has become their main home. In a recent interview, he explained that the choice was all about giving their kids a more normal childhood.

He said raising children in Los Angeles felt stressful, especially with paparazzi and constant attention. He didn’t want his twins growing up worried about cameras or being compared to other celebrity kids. Life in France, he said, is calmer and more grounded.

According to Clooney, his children enjoy a simple routine less screen time, shared family dinners, and everyday responsibilities like clearing their plates. He described it as a happier and healthier way to grow up.

While George is still struggling with the French language joking that his skills are “horrible” Amal and the twins are already fluent. He even laughed in a French TV interview that they sometimes speak French around him so they can tease him without him understanding.

The family reportedly spends part of the year at their 18th-century villa near the town of Brignoles in southern France. Locals say the Clooneys blend in easily. The town’s mayor described them as friendly and down-to-earth, noting that George shops locally and even attended the reopening of the town’s cinema.

French privacy laws also offer strong protection, especially for children, helping the family avoid unwanted photos and attention.

It’s not yet clear whether George Clooney has kept his U.S. citizenship alongside his new French one. Amal was born in Lebanon and raised in the UK, while the twins were born in London.

For the Clooneys, becoming French citizens seems less about fame and more about finding peace, privacy, and a better everyday life for their family.
